Citizenship By Descent
You may be eligible to apply to become an Australian citizen by descent if:
- you were born outside Australia, and
- one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth.
If your Australian citizen parent was a citizen by descent then that parent must have spent at least two years in Australia.
If you were born outside Australia or New Guinea before 26 January 1949 you may be eligible if:
- at least one or your parents became an Australian citizen on 26 January 1949; and
- that parent was born in Australia or New Guinea, or was naturalized in Australia before your birth.
All applicants aged 18 years and over must be of good character.
Applications for children under 16 years of age must be made by a parent or legal guardian.
The applicant is required to pay the visa application charge (VAC) and the service fee for application lodgment and biometric collection.
VAC is the amount of money in Australian dollars (AUD) or local currency that must be paid for a visa application. In some cases the visa application charge is nil.

From 1 July 2014, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection is moving to a full user-pays model at all biometric Australian Visa Application Centres. This means that the Service Delivery Partner will charge clients a service fee for visa application lodgment and biometric collection. This is in addition to visa application charges The service fees will be as follows:

- VAC are payable in Australian dollars (AUD) only in Australia. You will need to provide a copy of the receipt along with the application

One passport-sized photograph (please attach to the form). NB - ID photos that have been digitally enhanced or altered to improve or change appearance or remove distinguishing features are not acceptable. As the photos are required for identity purposes, if they do not represent your true appearance, your visa application may be delayed if you need to be asked to provide new photos. The photos should also meet normal passport size and pose (front on head and shoulders, no facial coverings or sunglasses).

DIBP aims to process applications within these service standards; however, actual processing times may vary depending on a range of factors.
The service standards do not include the courier shipment time from the respective Visa Application Centres in UAE & across GCC Countries.
