Overview

How to apply for a residence or work permit (long stay visa)


A residence permit is given only upon approval by Danish Immigration Service in Copenhagen – the process may take 4 to 6 months. Application forms can be downloaded (Please note that each of the application forms for Danish residence and work permits has been developed for a specific type of applicant).

Submission of applications:


All applicants who wish to submit an application have to appear at VFS in person.


Interview:


The applicant will be given an interview date and time for them to appear in person at Embassy of Denmark.


Requirements for residence and work permit applications:


The following requirements should be met when handing in the application for residence or work permit.


Remember that all documents must be in original and one copy.


  • Application form
  • Valid passport
  • Photo
  • Application fee
  • All supporting documents (see below)

Requirements for family reunification of spouses:


  • Completed application form  in capital letters with preferable black pen, signed by the applicant
  • Birth certificate + photocopy
  • Marriage certificate + photocopy
  • Certificate of divorce + photocopy (if applicable)
  • Letter from employer or school + photocopy
  • Current passport valid at least six months beyond requested residence period + photocopy of the data page
  • Previous passport if any + photocopy
  • One recent passport sized photographs in colour with white background

Requirements for family reunification with children:


  • Completed application form  in capital letters with preferable black pen, signed by the applicant
  • Birth certificate + photocopy
  • Letter from school + photocopy
  • Current passport valid at least six months beyond requested residence period + photocopy of the data page
  • Previous passport if any + photocopy
  • One recent passport sized photographs in colour with white background

For all other applications:


  • Completed application form  in capital letters with preferable  black pen, signed by the applicant
  • Birth certificate + photocopy
  • Letter from school or employer + photocopy
  • Letter or contract from reference or school in Denmark
  • Current passport valid at least six months beyond requested residence period + photocopy of the data page
  • Previous passport if any + photocopy
  • One recent passport sized photographs in colour with white background

Denmark has introduced biometric residence cards on 20 may 2012.


From 20 May 2012 residence cards must contain digital photos, fingerprints and signature.


When you submit your application at VFS in person, you will need to have your biometric data recorded.


Children below 6 years of age need to appear in person at VFS, but are not required to have fingerprints or signature recorded, only a photograph.

Please Note:

  • The applicable visa fee in Naira is as per current exchange rate. It is subject to change without notice.
  • Naira in 500 & above only be accepted
  • The visa fee should only be paid at the time of submission of the documents at the Application center.

*The Service fee is inclusive of VAT

  • Visa fee and service fee needs to be paid by cash at the implant bank counter in the application center at Lagos and Abuja
  • The visa fee & service charges are non- refundable and non- transferable.
  • The visa application fee submitted and cancelled on same application day would be refundable but non- transferable.
  • Kindly carry the applicant's 1st page Passport photocopy while paying the service fee and the visa fee at the Sterling bank.

Photo Specifications

Photo Appearance

  • The photograph must be a full-face front view in which the visa applicant is facing the camera directly.
  • Face should cover about 60-70 percent of the photo area.
  • The photograph MUST be in color and have only a white background. Photos with dark, busy, or patterned backgrounds will not be accepted.
  • General, the applicant's head, including both face and hair, should be shown from the crown of the head to the tip of the chin on top and bottom and from hairline side-to-side. It is preferable that ears be exposed.
  • Photograph depicting a person wearing a traditional facemask or veil that does not permit adequate identification is not acceptable.

Processing Time

A residence permit is given only upon approval by Danish Immigration Service in Copenhagen – the process may take 4 to 6 months. Such a permit is valid for Denmark only, not the entire Schengen-area. Application forms can be downloaded (Please note that each of the application forms for Danish residence and work permits has been developed for a specific type of applicant).
