General information about student visas

Student visas are for people who wish to undertake a course of formal study. People who wish to undertake a course of less than three months' duration may study while holding a Tourist visa. There are 7 visa subclasses in Australia's student visa program: the visa subclass under which you will be assessed is determined by your main course of study.

All students intending to apply for a student visa should check the Assessment Level and requirements that will apply to their application on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

Student visas are only available to students who wish to undertake a registered course on a full-time basis. Visas are not available to part-time students or for studies by correspondence. For details of full-time, registered courses refer to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website.

Students should also refer to the Study in Australia website.

Student Agents

The Australian High Commission does not endorse the services of any particular student agent or education provider. Applications received from agents are processed in the same way as applications received directly from visa applicants.

Paying Fees to Education Providers

Student visa applicants are advised not to enrol or pay institution fees before lodging a visa application. Student applications can be made to the High Commission on the basis of a “Letter of Offer” from an education provider. Acceptance by an Australian educational institution does guarantee that a visa will be granted. Student visa applicants must meet legislative requirements for the grant of a visa.
