General information about student visas
Student visas are for people who wish to undertake a course of formal study. People who wish to undertake a course of less than three months' duration may study while holding a Tourist visa. There are 7 visa subclasses in Australia's student visa program: the visa subclass under which you will be assessed is determined by your main course of study.

All students intending to apply for a student visa should check the Assessment Level and requirements that will apply to their application on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

Student visas are only available to students who wish to undertake a registered course on a full-time basis. Visas are not available to part-time students or for studies by correspondence. Student Agents
The Australian High Commission does not endorse the services of any particular student agent or education provider. Applications received from agents are processed in the same way as applications received directly from visa applicants.

Paying Fees to Education Providers
Student visa applicants are advised not to enrol or pay institution fees before lodging a visa application. Student applications can be made to the High Commission on the basis of a “Letter of Offer” from an education provider. Acceptance by an Australian educational institution does guarantee that a visa will be granted. Student visa applicants must meet legislative requirements for the grant of a visa.

VISA APPLICATION
PROCESS

Step 1

Select a visa subclass which is appropriate for the purpose of your travel to Australia and download the relevant visa application form.

Step 2

Your visa application may require supporting documentation. For a list of supporting documentation required for your visa, see checklists provided under Visa Types. Gather together the required supporting documentation for your application.

To avoid delays all supporting documentation should be submitted at the time of application.

Step 3

Organise payment of the visa fees in the form of a bank draft from a Sri Lankan bank.

Step 4

Make an appointment with the Australian AVAC to lodge your application and submit your biometrics

Step 5

Lodge your visa application and submit your biometrics at the AVAC. The Australian Visa Office may contact you to request additional information.
