Schengen Visa Application Requirements

Please note that all supporting documents need to be presented in original plus one photocopy. Except your application form

The following documents need to be presented by all applicants:

Fully completed application form (English - German)
Passport with at least two blank pages and valid residence permit for the UK. Note that the passport and the residence permit needs to be valid for at least three months beyond the validity of the requested visa. Passports which were issued over 10 years ago cannot be accepted for visa applications
Copy of bio data page of the passport
Copy of the UK residence permit
Copies of previous Schengen Visa of the last three years
1loose passport-size photograph according to ICAO standards
If the photos are not up to standard they will be rejected. (do not staple or glue the photo to the application form. Please make sure it is not damaged)

Tourist Visa/Family Visit


Proof of sufficient funds: The applicant shall present proof that he possesses sufficient funds both for the duration of the intended stay and for the return to his country of origin or residence, e.g. recent (balance not older than a week) bank account statements showing movements over the last 3 months, traveller’s cheques, with the applicant’s name.

Hotel reservation or confirmation of tour

If you are going to stay with friends or family, the host needs to provide a letter of invitation, a copy of his/her passport and their police registration (Meldezettel). In some cases you might be asked to provide an “Electronic letter of guarantee“ (elektronische Verpflichtungserklärung) = EVE

This service is free of charge and provided by the local aliens police (,Bezirkshauptmannschaft’, ,Bundespolizeidirektion’, ,Bezirkspolizeikommissariat’). The authority dealing with your EVE will forward the information to the Austrian Embassy within 48 hours. You will receive an ID-number which the visa applicant should provide at the interview. Documents required for an EVE are:

Passport or Personal ID Card
Police registration
Recent bank statement
Last payslip
Tenancy Agreement
Passport number of visa applicant
Date of birth of visa applicant
Place of birth of visa applicant
Address of visa applicant

Please note that “Verpflichtungserklärungen” (=’letters of guarantee’) legalized by a notary public are no longer accepted.

Transport documentation: e.g. flight reservation, rail ticket, car papers (registration,  with insurance for Europe, ferry booking and drivers license). If you are travelling to more the one Schengen country during your stay please provide transportation within the countries: e.g. train tickets, bus, rental car papers.

Medical travel insurance with a minimum coverage of € 30,000 and validity for all Schengen states. Please insure that the paper presented includes the following information: Name of applicant, duration of insurance cover and cover details. The insurance certificates should be purchased in the UK, and must also cover winter sports. Travel insurance is available here

Evidence of occupation or student status addressed to the Embassy and not older than two weeks:  e.g. letter of employment / school / university. Proof of self-employment.

Business Visa

Letter from the business partner/organization in Austria or conference registration

Hotel booking or confirmation of tour. In some cases you might be asked to provide an EVE (=electronic letter of guarantee) from your business partner in Austria

Spouses/Civil Partners/Dependants of EU/EEA nationals exercising their right of free movement:

applicant's passport
Original passport of EU/EEA national and copy of bio data page
Original marriage certificate (spouse) and copy of it
or birth certificate (dependant) and copy of it

Spouses/Civil Partners/Dependants of EU/EEA nationals do require an appointment to apply for a Schengen visa.
