  • How do I apply for a visa to India?

    Step 1 : Prepare Your Application

    Click, Prepare Your Application. Confirm the visa type based on your reason for travel; do not make any confirmed bookings.

    Please check the jurisdiction section carefully to ensure you are applying at the correct Visa Application Centre based on your location – Jurisdiction.

    Step 2 : How To Apply

    Please go the following section for details of How To Apply. Please complete your application online or duly fill in the downloaded application form. If the application has been completed online you must download & print all form/s, read and complete Checklist.

    Please note that no previous versions or handwritten forms will be available on the website or accepted at any of the India Visa Application Centers.

    Check fees payable, payment options and documents required. All such details can be found in the respective visa categories under the section Visa Category

    Sign form/s in all indicated places.

    Ensure photos are strictly as per requirements – please see Photo Specifications..

    Check processing time to plan your travel accordingly.

    Attach all supporting documents required as per the document requirement for the visa category Make sure your application is complete. Incomplete applications cannot be accepted.

    Step 3 : After Submission

    Please go to the following section for details of how to track your application via SMS and email service, online, passport collection details and courier services – After Submission.

    Your passport will be returned to you by the mode of delivery opted by you when submitted. Allow for 2-3 days transit time for postal or courier return applications. Transit times differ by location and do not take into account any public holidays.

  • What are the normal processing times?

    Processing times vary from application to application at the sole discretion of the High Commission of India and its Consulates in the UK, and some applications may take longer than others to get processed. Hence, confirm your travel plans only after obtaining the appropriate visa.

  • Do the visa centers have anything to do with the actual visa decision?

    No. None of the staff in the visa application centers have any authority or discretionary ability with regards to the visa decision. Our job is purely administrative in nature and we cannot influence or expedite any decision.

  • Can I confirm all my travel bookings before getting the visa?

    No bookings or travel arrangements should be confirmed until a visa decision has been made. VF Services will not be responsible for any loss of  bookings  made in anticipation of obtaining a Visa.

  • If my visa is issued, from when does the validity begin?

    The validity of the visa begins from the date it is issued and not from the date of your departure mentioned on the application form.

  • Where can I get information on the addresses of the Visa Centers in the United Kingdom?

    Information on the location and timings of all our visa centers can be found on the following Contact Us section.

  • Can I send my application directly to the High Commission of India or its respective consulate in Birmingham or Edinburgh? Where does it go if I have done so?

    No. The High Commission of India or its consulates doesn’t accept any application in post. All the Visa/Passport/Select Consular and Surrender of Indian services are outsourced to VFS. All Postal application (Visa Only) must be sent to our Hounslow Application Centre ONLY. Applications sent to any other office will be returned without processing. VFS will not be responsible for any loss of documents sent to any other office. The processing time for postal applications will be minimum 2 weeks (15 days) from the date of receipt of complete application. This excludes the processing time of the application at the Mission. It is further clarified that incomplete/incorrect applications would be returned. To avoid any inconvenience, it is strongly advised to submit applications with prior online appointment in person or through authrised nominee.

    Please note, no email or telephonic queries will be entertained for 15 days from the receipt of application at the office.

  • If I am unable to provide the last 2 years utility bills as proof of being a UK resident – how do I continue with the process?

    You can fill up a Non-UK Form through the website or at the visa center and pay Referral Fee of £10. The minimum processing time for Non-UK Passport holders (resident in the UK for less than 2 years)  is minimum 10-15 working days.

  • Can I edit the Form once it is printed?

    The online form cannot be edited once it has been printed. Please ensure that you verify all the information you enter before you finally submit the application and take a print out. IN case of an error, you would have to redo a new application form.

  • How do I retrieve the form if I have not completed it?

    At the start and on each subsequent page of the online form there is a unique temporary ID that is generated at the top of the page. This number must be correctly noted for you to be able to retrieve your application before it is printed.

  • Can I make a payment online?

    Payments can be made for your application online however you do also have the facility to make a payment at the visa center itself when you come to submit your documents.

  • Do I have to have an appointment to submit my application?

    Yes. No applications will be accepted at the application centres without appointment except in case of Emergency.

  • What does a V.A.F stamp mean?

    If you have received your passport back with a stamp marked V.A.F. it does not mean that your visa has been refused. Visa Applied For (V.A.F) is stamped on your passport when the High Commission or it’s Consulate Generals require further processing on your application.

  • Where are the fees and checklists for the visa categories?

    Under the section of Visa Category at the top of the Homepage, a complete list of each visa category is provided. Within each category, once selected, you will see multiple tabs under the main heading providing details of Visa Fess, Document Checklist, Application Form, Photo Specifications and FAQ. Please review these details carefully before completing your application.

  • If I send an email asking about the status of my application – what information do I need to first provide?

    When sending an email to the Customer Feedback ID – please ensure that you include details such as your full name, the center you have applied through, your passport number, date of birth. In case of postal applications please also include the envelope tracking number used initially. This will help us to identify your case more quickly. Please note that further details may be asked from you through correspondence.

  • Can I apply for a visa to India through the London High Commission if I am outside of the UK?

    Applications through any of the missions within the United Kingdom should be done by applicants who are physically present in the country.

  • What are the Urgent Business Visas?

    Urgent Business Visa applications are accepted from those applicants for who need to urgently travel to India on Business only. These applications are solely accepted through our India Visa Application Center on 142-148, Goswell Road, London EC1V 7DU. Applications must be submitted from 8.30 AM and before 11.00 AM otherwise they cannot be accepted. UBV applications are submitted to the High Commission the same day and if the visa is granted – the passports can be collected the same evening from the visa center. Urgent Business Visa Applications can also be submitted at out Birmingham and Edinburgh Applications centers as per the Jurisdiction.

  • If I have filled out a Form for a Minor – who has to sign the application?

    Applications for Minors (under the age of 16) must be signed for by the Parent or Guardian otherwise they cannot be accepted. In case of postal applications – the documents will be returned to the applicant if the signatures are missing. The parents are required to provide a consent letter along with the copy of the passport for the Minor child’s application.

  • Do I need to submit originals of any documents when applying for a visa to India?

    No. Please submit only photocopies of your documents at the time of submission, unless originals are requested. Documents submitted will not be returned and originals may be required (and subsequently returned) only if asked for by the High Commission or it’s Consulate General’s after they have reviewed your initial application.

  • How do I know on which days will the visa centers be closed?

    A detailed list of all holidays on which the visa center will be closed is provided under the tab General Information found at the top of the homepage, headed Consular Holidays.

  • What do I need to do when visiting the visa centers?

    Upon reaching the visa center, you will be issued with a checklist based on the category you are applying for. While you wait for your token to be called – please ensure that you read the checklist to clarify that all required documents are ready. Incorrect documentation or photo specifications will only cause a further delay in acceptance of your application.

  • What happens once I get to the visa center? How do things work?

    Once you arrive at the visa center, the security guard will issue you a token depending upon the purpose of your visit. You would then be required to wait in the applicant area until your token is called. Use this time to go through the checklist provided to you to ensure your application is complete. At the counter, the Agent will check your documents, process your application if it is completed and issue you a receipt. Information about collection times will be given to you but we will not be able to advise you on the time it would take to have a decision on your visa made. You would then be able to track your application through the website until the time your passport is received back with a decision.

  • Do the visa centers accept applications for OCI? Can they provide any information?

    From 02 March 2015 OCI applications can be accepted at all India Visa Application centres. Please see the following link for details.

  • If I need to offer a compliment for good service or a complaint for service not upto mark – to where can I address this?

    You can address all such feedback, including application queries to . Complete information is given under the tab ‘Contact Us’ found on the left hand side of the homepage.

  • Can I make a payment in the center itself?

    Yes. Payments for applications can be made in the visa center but cheques are not accepted as a payment method.

  • When filling the online form – what do I need to do and record?

    Please note down the unique temporary ID number generated at the top of each page on the online form. You will not be able to retrieve your application for completion without this number.

  • When having completed the online form – what do I need to do and record?

    Please note down the final GBRL/GBRB/GBRE number that is generated once you have completed the online form.

  • When I make an appointment can I choose the date and time?

    The online appointment system will only allow you to select a date on which you would like to apply. The time of submission will automatically be assigned to you based on availability.

  • Do I need to come in person to submit or collect my papers?

    Applicant’s representatives can come to submit an application or collect a passport on behalf of the applicant. Please note that in case of passport collection – the document will not be handed over unless the original Receipt given at the time of submission is there.

  • What if I have lost my ICR for collection of passport?

    If you have lost your receipt, we will be unable to provide you with your passport without photographic proof of identification.

  • How do I track my application?

    You can track your application through the website by entering data required under the tab ‘Track your Application’ found on the left hand side of the homepage.

  • Can somebody else submit my application on my behalf?

    Only immediate family members or authorised nominees can submit applications on behalf of other family members, and proof of relationship must be provided.

  • How do I withdraw my application and will I get a refund?

    If you wish to withdraw your application you are required to visit the application centre and submit your withdrawal request. VFS will not be able to provide you any definite timelines to get your passport back. You are requested to wait and check the status of your passport on our website. Furthermore as per our refund policy all fees are not refundable / transferable even if you do not make or proceed with a visa application, and whether or not a visa is ultimately granted.

  • Can I just book 1 appointment for a group?

    No, the appointment can only be booked for Individual applications. You are requested to check the availability of the appointments slots
