Visitor Visa

All people visiting Australia, except Australian and New Zealand citizens, need a visa to visit Australia, regardless of the purpose of the visit.

Some nationalities are eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)( subclass 601) or an eVisitor (subclass 651) visa online or through travel agents or airlines – see Online Application. Singapore passport holders are eligible for an ETA and are also eligible for a Long Validity Visitor visa (see below).

If you have a problem applying for an ETA and are encountering an error message, you should wait and try again the next day. If you continue to receive an error message, or receive a message that says “Refer to Embassy”, you may submit an enquiry through the ‘Contact Us’ page on WebETAS (

Note that these online visas, whilst they allow tourism and business-related visits, do not permit work of any kind, no matter how short. All nationalities seeking to engage in a work-related activity, even for a few days, should read the information about the Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa ( subclass 400).

For all other nationalities seeking to visit for tourism or business visitor activity, the Visitor visa (subclass 600) is available. There are two streams for this visa that can be applied for outside Australia:

For people to visit Australia temporarily for a holiday, to visit relatives or friends or for other short-term non-work purposes, such as informal study for less than three months and for amateur sporting purposes.

Nationals of certain countries can now apply for this visa online – see: Online lodgement arrangements for subclass 600

All other nationals must make a paper application.

For customers seeking to engage in business visitor activities including:

  • attending meetings, conferences and seminars
  • business or contract negotiations
  • business exploration, job interviews, investment
  • undertaking professional examinations or attending job interviews
  • making general business or government enquiries
  • government visits

The Visitor  visa (subclass 600) does not permit supplying goods or services, nor other work of any kind, other than the business activities indicated above. If your proposed activity involves working in Australia, even for a brief period, see the information about the Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa (Subclass 400).

Nationals of certain countries can now apply for this visa online – see: Online lodgement arrangements for subclass 600

All other nationals must make a paper application.

If you are not eligible to apply online for an ETA or eVisitor, or online for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600), a paper application for the Visitor Visa (subclass 600) application may be lodged in Singapore at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC). For more information, including eligibility requirements and the application checklists, please see the above tabs.

Domestic Helpers - Note that domestic helpers accompanying their employers on holiday may apply for a Visitor (subclass 600) visa. Please read the Domestic Helper Information form before submitting an application.

The Visitor visa (subclass 600) – long validity option allows holders of a Singapore passport to apply for a visa that allows multiple entries and has a validity period of up to six (6) years. For more information about this visa option, please see: Visitor visa (subclass 600 – long validity option - Singapore)..

Customers must satisfy all criteria for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) as set out in Australian migration law before a visa can be granted. The legal criteria for the grant of a Visitor visa require, among other things, that customers meet Australia's health and character standards, have adequate funds for support for the period of the visit and intend a genuine temporary stay in Australia. Customers may also be required to provide details about their military service and any relatives they are visiting.

For further information on the criteria, you may refer to the Visitor visa (subclass 600) application form and checklist.

Customers must make an appointment to lodge a long validity Visitor visa. At the appointment, they will be required to enrol their biometrics and will be provided with assisted online visa application lodgement at the AVAC.

Australia's modern electronic visa system does not require you to have a visa label placed in your passport to confirm your immigration status and entitlements in Australia.

You can use Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) for free to check your visa status and entitlements. Your electronic visa details are linked to the passport information you gave us in your application. It allows you to check your visa details online and provides more information about your visa conditions and entitlements than a label.

myVEVO provides greater access and flexibility for visa holders. It enables them to view and email their work and study conditions wherever they go or email employers or education providers an official record of their visa details directly from their phone.

  • Users can log in to the app using a four digit PIN they create themselves. This is easier to remember than other Departmental issued client identifiers.
  • Visa holders can also easily check their visa expiry date, which is useful for visitor visa holders while on holiday or travelling.
  • Users can download and find out more information about myVEVO from their app store: Apple or Android.
