Head of Empowerment and Inclusion, VFS Global

My designation in the corporate world has the words Empowerment and Inclusion in it, two aspects of life I am personally passionate about. To me, culture is the foundation of empowerment. The more you understand each other’s culture, the more empowered you are to work together towards definite success. And this cannot happen without Inclusion.

The UAE is a melting pot of cultures. How often have we heard and made this statement? It is indeed a matter of pride for every UAE citizen and resident, creating a nation that offers an unparalleled multicultural environment. At the centre of it all is the Emirati culture of hospitality, tradition, respect and, like the 2026 theme suggests - family - all values that resonate in some way or other with people from across the globe.

In the private sector, Emiratis play a larger role than just employees – that of cultural ambassadors. In workplaces that have a majority of expatriates, representing the values and heritage of the nation becomes a key responsibility, bridging cultures, fostering mutual respect, and positioning Emirati identity on a global stage. For any organisation, this role is not just important, it is indispensable to creating a truly inclusive and authentic environment.

But no progress is possible without advocacy. It is no different for Emirati professionals. Success depends not solely on the individual’s capabilities, but also on organisational support. Companies need to step up beyond filling quotas and focus on meaningful integration. I read somewhere that success is not about numbers - it’s about impact, and it is a line that has stuck with me. Providing clear career pathways from the outset is essential, and is something I try to implement within my own role in the corporate world, through early career development programmes, mentorship opportunities, and even cultural sensitivity trainings.

At VFS Global, we believe in more than just gainful employment – our workplace is also a platform for growth. Our approach is towards building an ecosystem that nurtures both professional and personal development. This could mean offering international language training to open doors for global opportunities, positioning Emirati talent on the world stage, or even fostering cultural understanding so expatriate colleagues can collaborate seamlessly with their Emirati counterparts. The result? A workplace where diversity drives innovation.

The success of Emiratis in the private sector is a shared responsibility. As we celebrate our 54th Union Day, and prepare to step into a new year, let’s make a shared commitment - for organisations to champion inclusivity and celebrate Emirati values, while Emiratis embrace opportunities to lead and inspire. Together, we can build workplaces where diversity is not just acknowledged but leveraged for collective growth.
