HOW TO APPLY

Step 1 : Register an application on the Application Portal.

Applicants must register their applications online using the (Application Portal). Choose the category Visa (Short visit) for Schengen visa applications, or other category for residence permit .

Please note that all the applicants are required to provide an online payment receipt confirming online registration and payment of the fee in the (Application Portal) when submitting the visa/permit application at a Visa Application Centre.

Applicants who submit their applications at the Visa Application Centers in Tokyo will be requested to pay a handing fee and a logistic fee for sending application to the Embassy in Beijing, when submitting their completed applications at Visa application centre.

If you intend to visit Norway for 90 days or less, you need to apply for a Schengen visa (Application Portal) . If you intend to stay in Norway for more than 90 days either for work, study or to reunite with family member in Norway, you need to apply for a residence permit (Application Portal).

As a general rule, all applicants must submit their applications in person at the Visa Application Centre in Tokyo. If you reside in Japan but are a citizen of another country, you must have had a valid residence permit in Japan for the last 6 months, and the residence permit must also be valid for minimum 3 months after the intended stay in Norway.

Step 2 : Submit supporting documents and your passport.

Before applying, please make sure that you are clear about your ‘purpose of visit’ – do remember that we are not permitted to advise or guide you on choosing a visa category. Our work is primarily administrative and we have no saying in the decision making process. The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing will assess the visa applications and return the decisions to the Visa Application Centre in sealed envelopes. Residence permit application will be assessed by Director of Immigration of Norway and decision will be return to you via Visa application center in Tokyo .

After you have registered an application on the Application Portal, you can submit your passport and supporting documents at the Visa Applications Centers in Tokyo.

Please be informed that all applicants have to appear in person when submitting their application

Step 3 : Case processing times and case handling

For Schengen Visa;

The processing time of a Schengen visa depends on each individual case. However, applicants should always apply several weeks before the intended journey. Applications for Schengen visas can be submitted at the earliest 90 days before the planned travel date, and at the latest 15 + 2 to 5 working days before the planned departure date.

If the case is considered uncomplicated, it can be handled by the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing in which case it will be processed within 15 working days plus 2 to 5 days in transportation of physical documents between Tokyo to Beijing (counting from the day the Embassy receives all the requested documents). If the case is considered somewhat complicated, the case will be handled by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway. In such case takes longer for decision making.

For Residence Permit

Your application documents will be sent to The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, however your case will be handled by Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. The process time will be depending on each individual case, and you can find out on UDI website for further.

Applicants who wish to apply for a Schengen visa or residence permit are requested to fill in the application form online using the secure Application Portal before submitting their supporting documents at the Norwegian Visa Application Centre. Please note that all the applicants are required to provide an online payment receipt confirming online registration and payment of the visa fee in the Application Portal when submitting the visa application at the Visa Application Centre.

Applicants applying for Schengen visa and residence permits in Norwegian Visa Application Centre must book an appointment in advance. Visa application center in Tokyo is not accepting walk in applications. .

All applicants will be request to pay the handing fee plus a logistic fee (for the cost of delivery between Tokyo to the Embassy in Beijing) when submitting their completed applications at the Visa Application Centre.

Step 4 : Application results and return of passport

When your application has been processed,visa(on passport) /permit will be sent back to the Visa Application Centrein Tokyo. You can collect your passport/Permit decision within office hours. Applicants can also choose to have the decision of their passports/permit couriered (sent by registered mail) to their office or home address by paying a nominal additional fee at the Visa Application Centre when submitting their supporting documents and passports.
