Whether you are required to apply for a Schengen airport transit visa or not depends on your nationality. Click here

Citizens of some countries must hold an airport transit visa when transiting through the international parts of airports situated in any of the Schengen States.

Fees are subject to change without prior notice. If your application meets the initial checks upon submission, it will then be accepted for Visa payments at Visa Application Centre. Payments can be made via Debit/Credit cards only.

Applicants are requested to collect appropriate receipts for all the payments.

After Embassy/Consulate verifies the documents submitted by the applicant, the Embassy/Consulate holds the right to ask for additional documents depending on the case if required.

If your visa is granted then it is the applicant's responsibility to check all the content of the visa issued to ensure it covers the period of stay requested, the number of entries required, the applicant details and that it is valid for the purpose of the trip.

   • Quebec
   • New Brunswick
   • Newfoundland and Labrador
   • Nova Scotia
   • Nunavut
   • Prince Edward Islands
   • Applicants for Schengen Visa C traveling to Austria and/or Germany.

   applicants for (Austrian) National Visa D, Visa C-Erwerb, Visa D-Erwerb

   have to book an appointment at VFS Global – Ottawa Centre.

2. Residents of:
   • Manitoba
   • Ontario, except residents of the National Capital Region of Ottawa or its counties (Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, Prescott and Russell, Renfrew, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry)
   • Applicants for Schengen Visa C traveling to Austria have to book an appointment at the German Consulate in Toronto, ON.
   • Applicants for (Austrian) National Visa D have to book an appointment at VFS Global – Ottawa Centre.
3. Residents of:
   • Alberta
   • British Columbia
   • Northwest Territories
   • Saskatchewan
   • Yukon Territory
   • Applicants for Schengen Visa C traveling to Austria have to book an appointment at the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver, BC.

Applicants for (Austrian) National Visa D have to book an appointment at VFS Global – Vancouver or Edmonton.

Photo Specification

Please provide one recent (not older than 6 months) colour photograph of yourself, meeting the following requirements:

• Taken against a plain light (white or off-white) background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background
• Clear quality and with the face in focus
• Full face: non-smiling, no sunglasses, no hat/cap or any head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of his/her religious belief or ethnic background
• Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print)
• Photograph attached (glued) to the Visa Application Form

If the photographs presented do not meet these requirements (see examples here), then the visa application will be considered incomplete and applicant will be asked to take new photographs in the photo booth in the visa application centre

Processing Time

• Processing time for visa applications is minimum 10 working days (starting from the time when the Embassy or Consulate received the application, not including the transportation time), counting from when all requested documents have been submitted.
• This period may be extended in specific cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is required, for example, when an applicant must come to an interview or submit additional documentation requested by the Embassy or Consulate.
• During certain times of the year, the processing time can be longer due to the high volume of applications. It is recommended to submit your visa application at least three weeks prior to the date of travel date and if possible, even earlier ahead of the holiday period.
• Please note that the application processing time and decisions on visa applications are the sole prerogative of the Embassy or Consulate. VFS Global has no role to play in these areas of the application process.

Overview

A Schengen visa is valid for Schengen member states, however the decision is sole discretion of Embassy/Consulate

The visa application cannot be submitted more than 6 months prior to departure and application has to be lodged not later than 15 business days before the intended start of the trip. Otherwise the application is inadmissible.

Applications are processed in the order of receipt.Processing usually takes approximately 15 business days from receipt by the Embassy of a complete application.

If further checks are necessary, the processing time may increase.to approximately 45 business days. This estimate excludes the shipping of applications to the Embassy and the return of passports to applicants.

The Embassy does NOT provide status updates on visa applications.

Overview

If you intend to stay in Austria for more than 90 days and up to 6 months AND you are not a citizen of an European Union or European Free Trade Association member state, you need to apply for a national Austrian visa (Visa D).
