All About Visas
Important Processing Time and Admissibility
As a rule, the processing time of an admissible Schengen visa application should not exceed 15 calendar days (from the date the application is received at the Embassy).
If the checklist is incomplete, the application will be on hold until all the necessary documents are received by the Embassy. If further checks or additional documents are required, the processing time may increase up to 45 calendar days.
The transit time from the VFS Center to the Embassy and back to the applicant varies between 1 and 4 days one way, depending on the location.
The Embassy is not asking for confirmed air tickets. The Embassy recommends applicants to apply at least 4 weeks before their intended travel date (6 weeks during peak season from March to June).
If the application is received less than 15 calendar days before the intended travel date, the Embassy can deem your application inadmissible. If so, your visa application will not be processed by the Embassy and the application will be sent back to VFS along with the passport.
Prospective Applicants - All Visa Categories
If you wish to apply for a visa to Luxembourg, kindly read the information on this site carefully. The guidelines listed on this site will help you to prepare your documents as accurately as possible. This will reduce the chances of your application being delayed or declined due to inadequate or incorrect submission of documents.
The Embassy of Luxembourg in India is competent for/authorized to process visa applications for:
- Indian citizens (short & long term visas)
- Foreign nationals who are legal permanent residents in India (short & long term visas)
A visa application can be submitted by:
- For Business, Visit to Family and Friends (Short Term), Cultural / Conference/ Sport Event, all Long Term categories like Work Permit, Family reunification and Study (Long Term & Short Term both), the applicant himself/herself, authorized company representative or a Travel Agent can come for the submission at VFS on applicant’s behalf.
- For all Tourist visas only the applicant himself/ herself is eligible to submit the applications in person. Representatives & Travel Agents are not authorized to submit on the applicant's behalf.
Indian citizens traveling to the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg have to apply for a Schengen visa. The application for a Schengen visa has to be made in the diplomatic mission of the country where the MAIN DESTINATION lies. Therefore, please check your travel plans before making your application to the Luxembourg Visa Application Centre. In case you are planning to travel to several Schengen countries within one trip, please apply to the Embassy/Consulate where you are going to stay for the longest period of time or the main purpose of stay. In case you are visiting several Schengen countries and planning to stay in each of them the same number of days/nights, you should apply for a visa at the Consulate/Embassy of the country of the first entry.
Applicants and authorized representatives in case of business visas can visit the Visa Application Centre within working hours to submit their applications. All minors must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian at the time of application submission.
Visa Category chosen by an applicant must be based on the purpose of travel to Luxembourg and the decision must be made by the applicants themselves – Visa Application Centre staff will not be able to assist you taking this decision.
Required Documents for all Visa Categories: Please note that the following essentials must be met by all applicants submitting their applications for visa.
- Passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Luxembourg. Passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel to Luxembourg in case of D Visa. Passport must have at least two blank pages to which a visa can be affixed, if not a new passport must be obtained before submitting your application. Please note: Passport cannot be valid for more than 10 years. Handwritten or not machine readable Indian passports issued after 01.04.2010 are not accepted.
- All applicants have to submit a fully completed visa application form signed and dated, supporting documents appropriate to the type of visa and 1 original passport-size photograph.
- The Embassy of Luxembourg will return processed passports to the Visa Application Centre.
In addition to the compulsory documentation required, the following documentation is required for applicants under the age of 18 (minors):
For children (under 18 years of age) traveling alone, written consent certified by public notary of both parents or guardians having the custody of the applicant.
For children (under 18 years of age) traveling with one parent only, written consent certified by public notary of the other parent or guardian.
BIOMETRICS COLLECTION
As from 2 November 2015 following the introduction of the Visa Information System (VIS), all Schengen visa applicants in India have to appear in person in order to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography).
The photograph can be digitally taken at the time of the application or scanned from an existing one.
For subsequent applications within 5 years the fingerprints can be copied from the previous application file in the VIS.
In case of reasonable doubt regarding the identity of the applicant, the consulate will collect again fingerprints within the 5 year period specified above. Furthermore, the applicant may request that they be collected if, at the time when the application is lodged, it cannot be immediately confirmed that the fingerprints were collected within this 5-year period.
Visa applicants' biometric data can be collected by Schengen States' consulates and external service providers but not commercial intermediaries (e.g. travel agencies).
WHO IS WAIVED FROM THE REQUIREMENT TO GIVE FINGERPRINTS?
The following applicants shall be exempt from the requirement to give fingerprints:
- children under the age of 12;
- persons for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible. If the fingerprinting of fewer than 10 fingers is possible, the maximum number of fingerprints shall be taken. However, should the impossibility be temporary, the applicant shall be required to give the fingerprints at the following application. The competent authorities shall be entitled to ask for further clarification of the grounds for the temporary impossibility.
- heads of State or government and members of a national government (Ministers and Ministers of State only) with accompanying spouses, and the members of their official delegation when they are invited by Member States’ governments or by international organisations for an official purpose.
This list is mandatory and exhaustive. Holders of diplomatic passports are not exempted as such from the fingerprinting requirement. They may be exempted if they are members of the official delegation of heads of State/members of a national government invited for an official purpose.
Required Travel Insurance
A travel medical insurance is a compulsory document and has to be included in each set of submitting documents from all prospective visitors applying for a visa to Luxembourg. The traveller must be covered for an amount of at least 30,000 Euros. Please note that depending on the type of visa requested, further documents might be required.

The visa fee and VFS charges are payable in Cash, Visa, Master Card and Rupay.

If you intend to travel to Luxembourg for business, conference cultural or sport event, tourism or to visit family and friends, you must submit documents to obtain a short - term Schengen visa, permitting a stay in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as well as in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 6-month period.
If you wish to reside in Luxembourg for a longer period of time (more than 90 days), you need to apply for a long term visa. Kindly check the information on the long term visa category on the current website.
The holders of valid Schengen visas may travel to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is the applicant’s responsibility to check the number of entries and visa validity period for the intended stay in Luxembourg and plan his/her travel in accordance with the issued visa.

Tourist

Overview
A Tourist visa is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Luxembourg for a limited period of time (up to 90 days). This category of visa caters to people wishing to visit Luxembourg for touristic purposes either through buying a tour or through self-bookings of tickets and hotel.
Applicants will have to provide evidence that he/she falls under this category.
Please note that applications can be lodged as early as, but no more than 6 months before the intended travel date, and no later than 15 calendar days before the start of the intended visit.

Documents Required
- Application form duly filled, dated and signed by the applicant.
- 1 recent passport size photograph in colour on white background. The photo should be pasted (not stapled) on the form.
- Copies of Schengen visas obtained during the last 5 years, if applicable.
- National passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of return and with at least 2 blank pages available + 1 copy of the data page of the passport.
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking).
- Complete travel program including itinerary, dates and places to be visited.
- Proof of the means of transport (reservation or booking; presentation of a paid ticket is not required). Including intra-Schengen connecting flight/train/bus ticket to Luxembourg. If connecting travel by car, please mention it.
- Covering letter on a business letterhead (original) from your employer/company/school stating your position, the length of your service and the confirmation that the adequate leave/vacation has been granted.

Proof of sufficient financial means to cover all expenses during your stay:
- Salary/Pension slips of the last 3 months.
- Employment contract or excerpt from the company register or similar document
- Status of personal bank account for the last 3 months in letter from your bank, including the name and signature of the bank branch manager (original).
- Letter from your bank (original) stating credit limit on your credit card.
- Income Tax return for at least 2 years (Proof of paid income tax).
- Overseas medical travel insurance valid for all Schengen countries for the whole duration of your stay with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros for all risks like accident, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and repatriation. For multiple entry visas, an additional declaration covering further journeys accordingly needs to be signed.

Photo Specifications
A Photograph submitted with the application for a visa should comply with the following specifications:
- Must be an up-to-date photograph (dated max 6 month old)
- Must be a color photograph printed on normal photographic paper
- Should be sized between 35 – 45 mm
- Full face taken straight forward 30 - 36 mm from point of the chin to top of hair
- Taken against a white background
- Without sunglasses
- Without hat or other head covering unless you wear this for religious reasons
- Spectacles should not have toned or reflecting glasses
- The frame of the spectacles may not cover the eyes
- The mouth must be shut
- Applicants should clearly write their name and surname on the back of their photographs
- The photo fixed on form needs to be less than 6 months old and non-edited and no-filter used.

A Business visa is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Luxembourg for a limited period of time (up to 90 days). This category of visa caters for people wishing to visit Luxembourg for business reasons but does not allow carrying out a professional activity.
Applicants will have to provide evidence that he/she falls under this category.

Cultural, Sport Event or Conference

Overview
A visa for a Cultural, Sport Event or Conference is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Luxembourg for a limited period of time (up to 90 days). This category of visa caters for people wishing to visit Luxembourg with the purpose of participating in Cultural and Sport events or participating in a Conference.
Applicants will have to provide evidence that he/she falls under this category.

Processing Time
As a rule, the processing time of an admissible Schengen visa application should not exceed 15 calendar days (from the date the application is received at the Embassy).
If the checklist is incomplete, the application will be on hold until all the necessary documents are received by the Embassy. If further checks or additional documents are required, the processing time may increase up to 45 calendar days.
The transit time from the VFS Center to the Embassy and back to the applicant varies between 1 and 4 days one way, depending on the location.
The Embassy is not asking for confirmed air tickets. The Embassy recommends applicants to apply at least 4 weeks before their intended travel date (6 weeks during peak season from March to June).
If the application is received less than 15 calendar days before the intended travel date, the Embassy can deem your application inadmissible. If so, your visa application will not be processed by the Embassy and the application will be sent back to VFS along with the passport.

A visa for a Cultural, Sport Event or Conference is only intended to allow a foreign national to visit Luxembourg for a limited period of time (up to 90 days). To benefit from a simplified procedure and from the visa fee exemption, you need to meet the following criteria:
(1) You are a family member of an EU/Iceland/Liechtenstein/Norway or Swiss national;
As per Article 2 (2) of the Directive 2004/38/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the right of citizens of the Union and their family members to move and reside freely within the territory of the Member States, ‘family member’ means:
(a) the spouse;
(b) the partner with whom the Union citizen has contracted a registered partnership, on the basis of the legislation of a Member State, if the legislation of the host Member State treats registered partnerships as equivalent to marriage and in accordance with the conditions laid down in the relevant legislation of the host Member State;
(c) the direct descendants who are under the age of 21 or are dependants and those of the spouse or partner as defined in point (b);
(d) the dependent direct relatives in the ascending line and those of the spouse or partner as defined in point (b);
(2) AND That EU/Iceland/Liechtenstein/Norway or Swiss national is residing in another Member State than that of which he/she is a national or travelling there to take up residence;
(3) AND You are accompanying the EU/Iceland/Liechtenstein/Norway or Swiss national or planning to join him/her for residence.
