Overview
What is a Schengen visa
Schengen visa is the document issued by the appropriate authorities to the interested party for visiting/travelling in and within the Schengen Area. Schengen visa holder may enter and remain within the Schengen Area without residence permit for up to 90 days over any 180-day period.

The Schengen area is composed of 26 states:
- 22 EU (European Union) member states: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden;
- 4 non-EU states: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland
Schengen area does not cover the United Kingdom, Ireland and countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus.
Lithuania joined Schengen agreement on 21st December 2007. All the short stay visas issued by Embassy of Lithuania in Ottawa are Schengen visas.
The Schengen visa and entry regulations are only applicable for a short stay not exceeding 90 days. Rules for a long stay exceeding 90 days are laid down by the National Law of the Member States concerned.

- All visa applicants must know that each visa application must include the original of each document and their photocopies, as listed on the website
- All visa applications presented will be carefully examined by our visa officer. However, we wish to draw you attention that to submit all the requested documents (originals with their photocopies) in order to avoid any delays.
An alien applying for a Schengen visa shall submit:
- a completed and signed application form;
- A valid travel document. Its validity shall extend at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States or, in the case of several visits, after the last intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen Member States. A travel document shall contain at least two blank pages and it shall have been issued within the previous ten years
- a color photo corresponding to the age of an applicant ;
- a visa fee;
- supporting documents:
- documents indicating the purpose of the journey;
- documents in relation to accommodation, or proof of sufficient means to cover his accommodation;
- documents indicating that the applicant possesses sufficient means of subsistence both for the duration of the intended stay and for the return to his country of origin or residence, or for the transit to a third country into which he is certain to be admitted, or that he is in a position to acquire such means lawfully, in accordance with Article5(1)(c) and (3) of the Schengen Borders Code;
- information enabling an assessment of the applicant's intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the expiry of the visa applied for;
- a document, proving the possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance during the stay(s) on the territory of the Member States with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. When applying for a multiple entries visa, a document proving the possession of adequate and valid travel medical insurance covering the period of the first intended visit shall be submitted. In addition, an applicant shall sign the statement, set out in the application form, declaring that he/she is aware of the need to be in possession of travel medical insurance for subsequent stays.

Photo Specifications
Please provide two (2) recent (not older than 6 months) color photograph of yourself, meeting the following requirements:
- Taken against a plain light (white or off-white) background so that features are distinguishable and contrast against the background
- Clear quality and with the face in focus
- Full face: non-smiling, no sunglasses, no hat/cap or any head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of his/her religious belief or ethnic background
- Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print)
Photograph attached (glued) to the Visa Application Form
If the photographs presented do not meet these requirements, then the visa application will be considered incomplete and applicant will be asked to take new photographs in the photo booth in the visa application center.

Processing Time
NOTE: Visas cannot be issued on the same day. Expedited visa processing is not applicable.
The decision on the issue of visa shall be made within 15 to 30 days, in specific cases up to 60 calendar days. In cases of countries with a visa facilitation agreement with the EU this time period is 10 days.

Overview
Regulations on a stay exceeding 90 days fall within the competence of each Schengen Member state national authorities therefore there is no uniform routine among the Schengen Member states.
All foreign nationals, including U.S. citizens, requesting entry to Lithuania with a purpose of a long stay for more than three consecutive months, may submit application for a National visa.
National visa, type “D”, to Lithuania is a visa which allows foreign national to enter to the Republic of Lithuania and stay there for a period longer than three months (not less than 91 days) National visa can be issued only for the period up to one (1) year.
A single entry national visa shall be issued to an alien who has been granted a Temporary or Permanent Residence Permit in the Republic of Lithuania.
A multiple entry national visa shall be issued to an alien whose purpose of entry into the Republic of Lithuania is long term stay in the Republic of Lithuania.
A national visa for multiple entries shall be issued for foreign citizen who intends to travel to the Republic of Lithuania with a purpose of work, study, professional activities and in other cases, foreseen in national law of the Republic of Lithuania, that require long-term stay on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.
Applicants who are not Canada citizens have to have a valid Canadian visa and permit or Permanent Resident card. Except CANADIAN citizens.
UKRAINIAN CITIZENS ARE VISA FEE EXEMPTS
Ground for issuing single entry National visa to Lithuania
- For foreign national who has been granted a Temporary or Permanent residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania.
Grounds for issuing multiple entry National visa to Lithuania
- For students arriving to Lithuania for studies according to international student exchange programs or student exchange programs drawn up by higher Educational establishment in Lithuania;
- For foreign national who is a student arriving to Lithuania to the consecutive full-time studies at Educational establishment in Lithuania;
- For an applicant who is coming to Lithuania to work as a professor or a teacher or in order to take part in scientific research and projects and has a written agreement with a science institution and their family members.
- For an applicant who is coming to Lithuania to participate in intergovernmental programs as a professor or in order to take part in scientific research and projects and their family members.
- For foreign national who is a professional sportsman or coach coming to Lithuania to undertake sports-related activities;
- Foreign national who is coming to Lithuania to work and has work permit issued by the Lithuanian Labor Exchange under the Ministry of Social Security and Labor of the Republic of Lithuania;
- For foreign national who is a seafarer arriving to a ship flying the flag of the Republic of Lithuania;
- For foreign national who is a seafarer, where a ship, a member of the crew whereof the alien is, is undergoing repairs in the Republic of Lithuania;
- For foreign national who is a journalist accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania;
- For a foreign national who is a manager of a company established in Lithuania in the period of 1 year prior to their application for visa if the capital of the company is 28 thousand and the foreign applicant invested 14 thousand into the company, or who is an owner of such a company and the capital of the company is 28 thousand euro.
- For foreign national who has submitted a request to issue or change a residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania; or EU family member permanent residence card.
- For foreign national who is coming to Lithuania to work requiring high professional qualification and has a resolution from Lithuanian Labor Exchange evidencing that his job requiring high professional qualification meets the needs of Lithuanian labor market, as well as for family members travelling together with foreign national;
- Seasonal workers.

Processing Time
The decision to issue a national visa is made within 15 calendar days from the date of the request. This period may be extended up to a maximum of 30 calendar days in individual cases. By way of exception, where additional documents are required in specific cases, this period may be extended to a maximum of 60 calendar days.
