VISA TYPES
Select the visa type that is right for you to see important information on visa fees, documents required, forms, photo specifications and processing times.
All applications have to be made in person by the applicant due to the biometric enrolment process.
All applicants must fully comply with relevant documentation required for respective visa categories. Incomplete applications may not be accepted.
Those applying for short-stay Schengen visas (for business, tourism, leisure) are advised to submit their application at the Italy Visa Application Centre.
The convention implementing the Schengen Agreement came into force on 26 March 1995. The Schengen countries require visitors to obtain a common visa, which permits entry into the Area. The Schengen countries have reached agreements with each other on entry requirements and a common Visa Application Form.
Tourist

Overview
A tourist visa allows you to stay for a short period in the Schengen area (not more than 90 days per 6 months)
If the visit involves two or more Schengen countries, the Embassy responsible for the issuance of the visa will be:
- The Embassy of the country in which the traveler is going to stay the longest.
- If the traveler is to stay the same time in different Schengen countries, the Embassy of the country of first entry.
It is advisable to plan your travel well in advance to avoid any inconvenience. Application can be lodged a maximum of 6 months before the start of the intended trip.
Holding a valid visa does not automatically give the right of entry to Schengen area. Please, be aware that holding a short-stay visa does not automatically entitle to enter Schengen area. Once arrived at Schengen border control, or during other controls, travellers may be asked to provide information on means of support, on how long they intend to stay in the Schengen State, and why they are visiting the Schengen State.
It is therefore recommended to carry with you copies of the documents presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of stay). For more information, please read art. 5 of Schengen borders code

Overview
Companies legally operating in Italy, inviting visa applicants can use the invitation letter format. Please note that the invitation letter should be written in the Italian language, on company letterhead and signed by the legal representative of the Italian company. The invitation letter accompanied with a copy of a valid identity document of the company representative who signed the letter, should be submitted with the visa application.
If the visit involves two or more Schengen countries, the Embassy responsible for the issuance of the visa will be:
- The Embassy of the country in which the traveler is going to stay the longest.
- If the traveler is to stay the same time in different Schengen countries, the Embassy of the country of first entry.
It is advisable to plan your travel well in advance to avoid any inconvenience. Application can be lodged a maximum of 6 months before the start of the intended trip.

Transit

Overview
AIRPORT TRANSIT VISA - An Airport Transit Visa (ATV - type A) exclusively allows transit through the International Transit Areas of airports in the Schengen Member States territory, and does not allow the holder to enter the territory of a Schengen State. Airport transit visa, allows change of flights in Italy but it is not possible to leave the Airport International Areas.
Only Citizens of the following countries are required to obtain visas for transit through Italian airports as per Art. 3, EC Reg. no. 810/2009:
Afghanistan – Bangladesh - Democratic Republic of Congo – Eritrea – Ethiopia – Ghana -
Iran – Iraq – Nigeria – Pakistan – Somalia - Sri Lanka – Senegal - Syria
Citizens of the countries listed above are exempt from the obligation to obtain an ATV if they satisfy certain conditions, for more information please see the web site:
TRANSIT VISA - If the travel itinerary includes stopovers, applicants need to apply for a Uniform Schengen Visa, Transit Visa type C.
A Transit Visa allows holders to enter the Schengen Area in order to change Airports.
Applicants need to demonstrate evidence showing actual need or convenience to transit through Italian territory and an entry visa for the third destination country, if required.

FAMILY REUNION WITH FOREIGN CITIZENS RESIDING IN ITALY
The visa application for family reunion, Long stay National Visa type D, can also be submitted directly at the Embassy of Italy. To book an appointment write to visti.mascate@esteri.it.
Those who according to Italian law have the right to family reunion with their relatives regularly resident in Italy, can apply by presenting the “Nulla Osta” from the relevant Italian Authorities and the documents required.

Tourist Visa For EU/EEA/swiss Family Member

Overview
This type of visa is only applicable for EUROPEAN UNION/EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA/SWISS FAMILY MEMBERS TRAVELING WITH or JOINING AN E.U./E.EA./SWISS NATIONAL
It is also possible to apply directly to the Embassy of Italy as the Embassy will continue to handle tourist visas for family members traveling with or joining an EU, EEA or Swiss National. In order to book an appointment please send an email to visti.mascate@esteri.it
The Directive 2004/38 / EC provides facilities for the following family members:
- spouse;
- the partner with whom the Union citizen has contracted a registered partnership, on the basis of the legislation of a Member State, if the legislation of the host Member State treats registered partnerships as equivalent to marriage and in accordance with the conditions laid down in the relevant legislation of the host Member State;
- the direct descendants who are under the age of 21 or are dependents and those of the spouse or partner as defined in point (b)
- the dependent direct relatives in the ascending line and those of the spouse or partner as defined in point (b);
If the conditions established by law are met, a tourism visa will be issued free of charge for a family member.
